Mesopotamia: Cradle of Western Civilization

Region

Mesopotamia is described as “between the rivers.” These two rivers are the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers. The flooding of these rivers is unpredictable and leaves silt. The Mesopotamians controlled this flooding with irrigation. More specifically, Mesopotamia is located in something called the Fertile Crescent, an area of rich soil east of the Mediterranean Sea and west of the Persian Gulf. It is also north of the Arabian Desert and south of Asia Minor. It can also be found between the Zagros and Anti-Taurus Mountains. In ancient times, the coastline provided abundant seafood and the rich soil allowed agriculture to flourish. Because of this, a great surplus of food occurred. This led to the creation of more urban areas, which acted as trade centers. This greatly increased the desire of the land, causing much warfare over the land. Because of the small number of mountains, besieging was simple.
